How-to guide List randomizer

How to Shuffle a List with Duplicate Entries

Here’s how to shuffle a list with duplicate entries: enter every intended occurrence and leave Remove duplicates disabled. Each repeated line then occupies a separate place in the shuffled output.

How to Shuffle a List with Duplicate Entries

A practice session includes two reading blocks, one listening block, and one speaking block. Repeating Reading is intentional because it should happen twice. Select Load example to populate the supplied list, or replace it with your own entries. Nothing is generated until you select Randomize list.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the items

Put one complete item on each line. Keep information that belongs together on the same line so the shuffle treats it as one entry.

  2. Choose the input settings

Use New line for a vertical list or Comma for a comma-separated list. Remove duplicates only when repeated entries should disappear.

  3. Shuffle and keep the output

Select Randomize list. Read the new order from top to bottom, then copy or download the result before generating again.

Worked example

A practice session includes two reading blocks, one listening block, and one speaking block. Repeating Reading is intentional because it should happen twice.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example input

Reading
Listening
Reading
Speaking

Example result

1. Reading
2. Listening
3. Speaking
4. Reading

Both Reading occurrences remain. The tool may place them next to each other; retaining duplicates does not imply spacing them apart.

Repeated entries also change selection frequency

In a full order, repeated labels represent repeated tasks or objects. If you take only the first item as a choice, a label entered twice has two chances to occupy that position. For explicit probability control, Weighted Random Picker makes those proportions easier to inspect than a long list of repeated text.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 4 retained entries. The list randomizer rearranges the supplied entries; it does not choose a subset. Blank lines are ignored, leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and every retained entry appears in the result. Duplicate removal is case-sensitive. You can enter up to 10,000 items. New generations are independent, so an item may land in its original position or the entire order may occasionally repeat.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep duplicates but prevent them from being adjacent?

The randomizer does not enforce spacing constraints. Review and adjust the saved order if adjacency is unacceptable.

Does randomizing guarantee a different position for every item?

No. A random shuffle can leave some items in place. The tool does not enforce a rule that every entry must move.

Can I save the randomized order?

Yes. Use Copy or Download while the result is displayed. The page does not keep a history, so save it before refreshing or generating again.

What should I check in the worked example?

Both Reading occurrences remain. The tool may place them next to each other; retaining duplicates does not imply spacing them apart.
