How-to guide List randomizer

How to Randomize a List without Losing Any Items

Here’s how to randomize a list without losing any items: keep duplicate removal off, put each complete item on its own line, and compare the entry counts before and after shuffling.

How to Randomize a List without Losing Any Items

Six equipment labels include two identical spare cables. Both cables need a place in the packing sequence, so each occurrence is retained. Select Load example to populate the supplied list, or replace it with your own entries. Nothing is generated until you select Randomize list.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the items

Put one complete item on each line. Keep information that belongs together on the same line so the shuffle treats it as one entry.

  2. Choose the input settings

Use New line for a vertical list or Comma for a comma-separated list. Remove duplicates only when repeated entries should disappear.

  3. Shuffle and keep the output

Select Randomize list. Read the new order from top to bottom, then copy or download the result before generating again.

Worked example

Six equipment labels include two identical spare cables. Both cables need a place in the packing sequence, so each occurrence is retained.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example input

Camera
Tripod
Spare cable
Battery
Spare cable
Memory card

Example result

1. Battery
2. Camera
3. Spare cable
4. Tripod
5. Spare cable
6. Memory card

The shuffled output still has six entries, including two Spare cable labels. The repeated wording is not a missing-item error.

Audit the list as a collection, not a set

A set comparison can hide a lost duplicate because it checks only distinct labels. Count repeated labels as well as total entries. If separate physical objects must be identifiable later, rename them Spare cable A and Spare cable B before drawing. Blank lines are not items and will not survive as empty positions.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 6 retained entries. The list randomizer rearranges the supplied entries; it does not choose a subset. Blank lines are ignored, leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and every retained entry appears in the result. Duplicate removal is case-sensitive. You can enter up to 10,000 items. New generations are independent, so an item may land in its original position or the entire order may occasionally repeat.

Settings used in this example
Remove duplicate entries: Off

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Does Remove duplicates change the number of entries?

It can. Leave it off when repeated entries are intentional, or label the repeated objects distinctly before using duplicate removal.

Does randomizing guarantee a different position for every item?

No. A random shuffle can leave some items in place. The tool does not enforce a rule that every entry must move.

Can I save the randomized order?

Yes. Use Copy or Download while the result is displayed. The page does not keep a history, so save it before refreshing or generating again.

What should I check in the worked example?

The shuffled output still has six entries, including two Spare cable labels. The repeated wording is not a missing-item error.
