About the random name picker

A random name picker selects a subset of your entries rather than assigning the whole list an order. Use it to choose a speaker, select a few activity participants, or draw a small sample of names. The unselected entries stay in the input so you can start another draw without typing the list again.

How to use the name picker

  1. Enter names one per line. Remove duplicate entries if each person should receive exactly one chance.
  2. Set How many to the number of names you need. The count cannot exceed the number of parsed entries.
  3. Click Pick names. Copy or download the selected entries. Starting another draw includes the entire input list again.

Example result

1. Dev
2. Bea

Two of the five entries are selected. Dev cannot appear twice within this draw, but can be picked in a later draw.

When to use it

Choose a participant

Select someone to start a game, answer a question, or demonstrate an activity. Check that the list reflects the people currently taking part.

Pick a small group

Select several volunteers or entries in one draw. This is different from splitting everyone into teams, since unselected names do not appear in the result.

Sample a list

Draw a few labels from an existing list for a low-stakes check or creative exercise. Keep the original input if you want to document what the draw included.

Options and input rules

Selection count
Request 1–100 names. The count must also fit the input list, so a list of eight entries supports at most eight selections in one draw.
Duplicate entries
Selection is without replacement by entry, not by person. If Alex appears twice in the input, both entries can be selected unless you remove duplicates first.
Drawing again
Previous picks are not removed automatically. Every click begins a new draw from the full list; edit the input yourself to exclude a prior selection.

How the randomization works

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same name appear twice in the results?

Only if it appears more than once in the input. Each entry can be selected once per draw. Enable Remove duplicates to keep one instance of each identical name.

How do I put everyone into a random order?

Use Name order. That tool outputs the complete list, while this picker selects only the requested number of entries.

Are winners removed after a draw?

No. The input remains unchanged, and previous selections can be picked again on the next draw. Remove them manually if you want to keep drawing from a shrinking list.

Is there a saved or verifiable draw record?

No. This is a browser-only picker with copy and text download. It does not issue certificates, retain draw history, or publish independent verification records.
