About the random name order generator

A name order generator gives every entry a position in a shuffled list. It is useful when the question is “who goes first, second, and third?” rather than “who is the one person selected?” The output includes the whole group, so you can establish the order once and work through it without drawing a new name for every turn.

How to use the name order

  1. Paste two or more names, preferably one per line. Add initials or surnames when two people share a first name.
  2. Choose whether repeated names should remain as separate entries. Check the item count against your attendance list.
  3. Click Shuffle names, then copy or download the complete order. Shuffle again to make a new independent order.

Name order example

One possible result is shown below. Your result will vary.

Input

Amir
Beth
Chloe
Diego

Example result

1. Chloe
2. Amir
3. Diego
4. Beth

The result assigns four turns. No name is removed, and the spelling of each entry stays unchanged.

When to use it

Classroom participation

Set a reading, demonstration, or answer order without relying on alphabetical lists. Include only the students taking part in that activity.

Meetings and introductions

Make a speaking order for a stand-up, workshop, or introduction round. Share the list so each participant can see who comes next.

Games and group activities

Assign turns for board games or party activities. If you need teams or partners instead of an order, use the dedicated grouping tools.

Options and input rules

Distinct participants
Names are text labels, not accounts. “Alex P.” and “Alex R.” identify separate people more clearly than entering “Alex” twice.
Removing duplicates
Enable this only when identical entries are accidental. With it off, two identical names occupy two positions and are indistinguishable in the output.
Saving the order
Use numbered output for a visible turn list. Download stores a plain-text copy; the page itself does not keep the list after a reload.

How the randomization works

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues() source. It walks through the list and exchanges each entry with a randomly chosen eligible position. The settings for this tool then determine how the shuffled entries become an order, selection, or set of assignments.

Entries and results stay in this page’s memory. This site does not upload your input or keep a saved history. A new generation replaces the displayed result; copy or download anything you want to keep before reloading or leaving the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a random name picker?

No. This page shuffles every name into an order. The name picker selects only the number of entries you request, which is better for choosing a person or a small subset.

Can I stop the previous first person going first again?

There is no previous-result exclusion. Each shuffle is independent, so someone can receive the first position again. Keep a separate rotation if everyone must take that position in turn.

Can I paste names from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy a single column and paste it with New line selected. Check that each line contains one complete participant label before shuffling.

Does the tool change capitalization or sort names first?

No. It trims surrounding whitespace and ignores blank lines, then shuffles the entries. Capitalization and name order within each line are preserved.
