How-to guide List randomizer

How to Randomize a Comma Separated List

Here’s how to randomize a comma separated list: select Comma under Separate by, paste your items, and randomize the list. Check the item count before generating.

How to Randomize a Comma Separated List

A comma-separated snack list contains apples, crackers, grapes, and pretzels. Comma mode treats those four labels as individual choices. Select Load example to populate the supplied list, or replace it with your own entries. Nothing is generated until you select Randomize list.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the items

Put one complete item on each line. Keep information that belongs together on the same line so the shuffle treats it as one entry.

  2. Choose the input settings

Use New line for a vertical list or Comma for a comma-separated list. Remove duplicates only when repeated entries should disappear.

  3. Shuffle and keep the output

Select Randomize list. Read the new order from top to bottom, then copy or download the result before generating again.

Worked example

A comma-separated snack list contains apples, crackers, grapes, and pretzels. Comma mode treats those four labels as individual choices.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example input

apples, crackers, grapes, pretzels

Example result

1. pretzels
2. apples
3. grapes
4. crackers

The output is a vertical shuffled list of four items. Commas in the input are separators, not punctuation retained inside an entry.

Use new lines when an item contains a comma

This is a simple text separator, not a quoted CSV importer. An entry such as Paris, France splits into two items in Comma mode even if you surround it with quotes. Put complete comma-containing labels on separate lines and select New line instead. Mixed new lines and commas also separate entries in Comma mode.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 4 retained entries. The list randomizer rearranges the supplied entries; it does not choose a subset. Blank lines are ignored, leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and every retained entry appears in the result. Duplicate removal is case-sensitive. You can enter up to 10,000 items. New generations are independent, so an item may land in its original position or the entire order may occasionally repeat.

Settings used in this example
Remove duplicate entries: Off
Input separator: commas

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Will quoted CSV fields stay together?

No. Quoted CSV parsing is not supported. Use one complete label per line when the text itself includes commas.

Does randomizing guarantee a different position for every item?

No. A random shuffle can leave some items in place. The tool does not enforce a rule that every entry must move.

Can I save the randomized order?

Yes. Use Copy or Download while the result is displayed. The page does not keep a history, so save it before refreshing or generating again.

What should I check in the worked example?

The output is a vertical shuffled list of four items. Commas in the input are separators, not punctuation retained inside an entry.
