How-to guide Dice roller

How to Roll a D20 without Dice

Here’s how to roll a d20 without dice: set Sides per die to 20 and Number of dice to 1, then roll the raw d20 value.

How to Roll a D20 without Dice

A game needs one result from 1 through 20. Any character bonus or penalty is applied after the roll. The settings below match the worked example. Change them to match your activity. Nothing is generated until you select Roll dice.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose the die size

Set Sides per die to the die your activity needs, such as 6 or 20. The choices run from 2 to 100 sides.

  2. Set the number of dice

Choose how many equal-sided dice to roll in this batch, up to 100. Mixed die sizes require separate saved batches.

  3. Roll and interpret the values

Select Roll dice. Read each value individually or use the displayed total if your rules call for a sum.

Worked example

A game needs one result from 1 through 20. Any character bonus or penalty is applied after the roll.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example settings

Sides per die: 20
Number of dice: 1

Example result

1. 20

The output is a raw face value. It does not decide whether an action succeeds without the game’s target and modifier rules.

Handle advantage and modifiers explicitly

If your rules call for two d20s and keeping the higher or lower, set the count to two and inspect the individual values. The displayed total is not the kept result for that procedure. Apply bonuses afterward and use the rulebook for special outcomes; the generator does not automatically interpret them.

Settings and limits to check

Each die independently selects an integer from 1 through the chosen side count. Repeats are valid, so two six-sided dice can both show 4. The total adds the displayed dice but does not apply game modifiers, advantage rules, reroll conditions, or custom success thresholds. Those interpretations belong to your game rules.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the range, count, or other settings with the result when they are needed to interpret it. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Can the roller add a +5 bonus?

Not automatically. Add the modifier to the raw result according to your game’s rules.

Can I roll different die sizes together?

One batch uses a single side count. Roll and save each die type separately if your game combines sizes.

Does the total include bonuses or penalties?

No. The total is the sum of the raw dice. Apply your game’s modifiers afterward.

What should I check in the worked example?

The output is a raw face value. It does not decide whether an action succeeds without the game’s target and modifier rules.
