Step-by-step instructions
Enter the active players
Use one unique label per participant and remove anyone who is not taking part. Check that nobody appears twice.
Choose the number of teams
Enter the team count, not the desired players per team. There must be at least two teams and at least as many participants as teams.
Generate and label the teams
Select Make teams. Check each roster, then copy the assignments and attach any team names, colors, or starting positions.
Worked example
Ten participants are drawing two five-person rosters. Everyone has confirmed they are taking part before the draw.
One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.
Example input
Alex Jamie Morgan Taylor Sam Jordan Casey Riley Drew Avery
Example result
Team 1 1. Taylor 2. Casey 3. Morgan 4. Alex 5. Avery Team 2 1. Drew 2. Jordan 3. Sam 4. Riley 5. Jamie
The count is balanced, but height, experience, and playing positions have not influenced the result.
Decide what happens when another player arrives
A late arrival changes roster sizes. Agree whether new players wait for the next game, join a substitution plan, or trigger an announced redraw. Replacing an active result without warning can move people between sides unexpectedly. If equal competitive strength matters, a purely random draw alone is not sufficient.
Settings and limits to check
The example has 10 retained entries. Team Generator balances headcounts: team sizes differ by at most one. It does not balance skill, positions, age, availability, or previous partnerships. The team count can be from 2 to 100, subject to the number of participants. Separate generations are independent and may create the same pairing again. Handle any fixed or restricted assignments before a general draw.
Settings used in this example
Number of teams: 2 Remove duplicate entries: On
Keep a usable copy of the result
Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.
The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I draw teams for a smaller casual game?
Yes. Enter your actual participants and choose two teams; the generator does not require a fixed sport-specific roster size.
Are the teams balanced by ability?
No. Only the number of players is balanced. Use your own assessment if skill or position balance is required.
Can I choose a maximum team size instead?
Use Random Group Generator when the maximum people per group matters more than selecting a team count.
What should I check in the worked example?
The count is balanced, but height, experience, and playing positions have not influenced the result.
