How-to guide Team generator

How to Make Random Teams

Here’s how to make random teams: enter all active players and choose the number of teams. The generator shuffles the roster and balances headcounts.

How to Make Random Teams

Eight players are divided into two teams. Every player receives one place, with no captain choosing favorites. Select Load example to populate the supplied list, or replace it with your own entries. Nothing is generated until you select Make teams.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Enter the active players

Use one unique label per participant and remove anyone who is not taking part. Check that nobody appears twice.

  2. Choose the number of teams

Enter the team count, not the desired players per team. There must be at least two teams and at least as many participants as teams.

  3. Generate and label the teams

Select Make teams. Check each roster, then copy the assignments and attach any team names, colors, or starting positions.

Worked example

Eight players are divided into two teams. Every player receives one place, with no captain choosing favorites.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example input

Alex
Jamie
Morgan
Taylor
Sam
Jordan
Casey
Riley

Example result

Team 1
1. Jamie
2. Morgan
3. Jordan
4. Alex

Team 2
1. Taylor
2. Casey
3. Riley
4. Sam

The result should show two teams of four. That checks size balance, not whether both teams have equal experience.

Choose the right control for your goal

Team count and team size are different inputs. Set Teams to 2 when you want two sides, even if each will have four people. For a maximum number per group, use Group Generator instead. A random draw can place strong players together, so agree on a separate ability-balancing process when that matters to the activity.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 8 retained entries. Team Generator balances headcounts: team sizes differ by at most one. It does not balance skill, positions, age, availability, or previous partnerships. The team count can be from 2 to 100, subject to the number of participants. Separate generations are independent and may create the same pairing again. Handle any fixed or restricted assignments before a general draw.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I name the teams before drawing?

The output uses numbered teams. Attach names or colors to those saved rosters after generating.

Are the teams balanced by ability?

No. Only the number of players is balanced. Use your own assessment if skill or position balance is required.

Can I choose a maximum team size instead?

Use Random Group Generator when the maximum people per group matters more than selecting a team count.

What should I check in the worked example?

The result should show two teams of four. That checks size balance, not whether both teams have equal experience.
