Step-by-step instructions

  1. Enter the active players

Use one unique label per participant and remove anyone who is not taking part. Check that nobody appears twice.

  2. Choose the number of teams

Enter the team count, not the desired players per team. There must be at least two teams and at least as many participants as teams.

  3. Generate and label the teams

Select Make teams. Check each roster, then copy the assignments and attach any team names, colors, or starting positions.

The example gives four people per team. It does not guarantee cross-department mixing or evenly distribute seniority.

Define any mixing requirements before drawing

Random does not mean every team will contain a person from each department. If that is a requirement, use a process that explicitly enforces it. For an unrestricted draw, label teams clearly and assign a shared meeting point. Avoid pasting employment details when simple first names or event IDs are enough to identify participants.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 16 retained entries. Team Generator balances headcounts: team sizes differ by at most one. It does not balance skill, positions, age, availability, or previous partnerships. The team count can be from 2 to 100, subject to the number of participants. Separate generations are independent and may create the same pairing again. Handle any fixed or restricted assignments before a general draw.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Will it keep managers and direct reports apart?

No. There are no relationship or department constraints in this tool. Handle required arrangements separately.

Are the teams balanced by ability?

No. Only the number of players is balanced. Use your own assessment if skill or position balance is required.

Can I choose a maximum team size instead?

Use Random Group Generator when the maximum people per group matters more than selecting a team count.

What should I check in the worked example?

The example gives four people per team. It does not guarantee cross-department mixing or evenly distribute seniority.
