How-to guide Number order

How to Shuffle a List of Participant ID Numbers

Here’s how to shuffle a list of participant id numbers: paste each eligible numeric participant ID once and shuffle the list without adding absent IDs.

How to Shuffle a List of Participant ID Numbers

A workshop uses IDs 104, 217, 309, 412, 526, and 638 instead of displaying personal names. Select Load example to populate the supplied list, or replace it with your own entries. Nothing is generated until you select Shuffle numbers.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Paste the existing numbers

Enter one number per line. Use the actual eligible numbers rather than generating a range that could include missing entries.

  2. Review separators and duplicates

Select the matching separator. Keep repeats when they represent real entries; remove them only if the number should occur once.

  3. Shuffle the supplied set

Select Shuffle numbers. Compare the input and output counts, then save the sequence before using it.

Worked example

A workshop uses IDs 104, 217, 309, 412, 526, and 638 instead of displaying personal names.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example input

104
217
309
412
526
638

Example result

1. 526
2. 412
3. 217
4. 309
5. 638
6. 104

The result provides an anonymous-looking order, but the organizer still needs a private lookup to identify each participant.

Keep identification separate from ordering

Numeric IDs reduce the need to paste contact details, but anyone with the lookup can still identify participants. Use the smallest necessary labels and share the lookup only where appropriate. Preserve leading zeros if they are part of your labels, and use List Randomizer for alphanumeric IDs. The shuffle does not anonymize or encrypt a participant database.

Settings and limits to check

The example has 6 retained entries. Number Order Generator accepts numeric entries and rearranges them without inventing new values. It supports up to 10,000 entries and keeps duplicates unless instructed to remove them. Numeric-looking identifiers are retained as supplied text, but alphanumeric labels belong in the general List Randomizer. Drawing only some numbers requires a picker rather than a full shuffle.

Settings used in this example
Remove duplicate entries: Off

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the eligible input list with the result when you need to explain which entries took part. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I include IDs such as P104?

Use List Randomizer or Name Order Generator for alphanumeric identifiers; Number Order Generator expects numeric entries.

Will gaps in my numbers be filled?

No. Only the numbers you enter appear in the output. Missing ticket or task numbers remain absent.

Does this choose just one number?

No. It returns a full order. Use Random Number Generator for a range draw, or a name picker for a subset of supplied IDs.

What should I check in the worked example?

The result provides an anonymous-looking order, but the organizer still needs a private lookup to identify each participant.
