How to Generate Random Numbers with Repeats

Here’s how to generate random numbers with repeats: enable Allow repeated numbers and generate the batch. Each value is drawn independently from the same inclusive range.

How to Generate Random Numbers with Repeats

Ten values are drawn from 1 through 6 to represent repeated independent outcomes. The settings below match the worked example. Change them to match your activity. Nothing is generated until you select Pick numbers.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Set the inclusive range

Enter the lowest and highest eligible whole numbers. Both endpoints can be selected.

  2. Choose a count and repeat rule

Set How many?. Disable repeated numbers when every selected value should be unique within the batch.

  3. Generate and record the values

Select Pick numbers and save the displayed values before starting another generation. Keep the settings with the result if they matter.

Worked example

Ten values are drawn from 1 through 6 to represent repeated independent outcomes.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example settings

Minimum: 1
Maximum: 6
How many: 10
Allow repeated numbers: On

Example result

1. 1
2. 6
3. 2
4. 2
5. 6
6. 3
7. 6
8. 2
9. 4
10. 3

The output may contain duplicates, but repeats are not guaranteed. Enabling them allows repeated values rather than forcing a repeated pattern.

Do not infer a pattern from a small batch

A value that has appeared several times remains eligible on the next pick, and a missing value is not automatically due. If the task requires a fixed number of each outcome, prepare that multiset and shuffle it instead. A random sample with replacement and a shuffled balanced list are different experiments.

Settings and limits to check

The picker returns integers, not decimals. Bounds must be whole numbers between −1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000, with the maximum at least the minimum. A batch can contain 1–100 values. Without repeats, the range must contain enough distinct values for the count. Separate batches can overlap because no history is kept.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the range, count, or other settings with the result when they are needed to interpret it. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Will every number in the range appear eventually?

There is no guarantee within a particular finite batch. The tool does not force coverage of every value.

Are both ends of the range eligible?

Yes. A range of 1 through 10 includes both 1 and 10, giving 10 eligible integers.

Can the same result appear in another batch?

Yes. Repeat prevention applies within the current batch, not across earlier generations.

What should I check in the worked example?

The output may contain duplicates, but repeats are not guaranteed. Enabling them allows repeated values rather than forcing a repeated pattern.
