How to Pick a Random Number between Two Numbers

Here’s how to pick a random number between two numbers: enter the lower and upper whole-number bounds and set How many? to 1. Both ends of the range are eligible.

How to Pick a Random Number between Two Numbers

A classroom activity needs one integer between 20 and 40, including both 20 and 40. The settings below match the worked example. Change them to match your activity. Nothing is generated until you select Pick numbers.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Set the inclusive range

Enter the lowest and highest eligible whole numbers. Both endpoints can be selected.

  2. Choose a count and repeat rule

Set How many?. Disable repeated numbers when every selected value should be unique within the batch.

  3. Generate and record the values

Select Pick numbers and save the displayed values before starting another generation. Keep the settings with the result if they matter.

Worked example

A classroom activity needs one integer between 20 and 40, including both 20 and 40.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example settings

Minimum: 20
Maximum: 40
How many: 1
Allow repeated numbers: Off

Example result

1. 27

The result is one of 21 possible integers. It is not limited to the 19 integers strictly between the bounds.

Say whether the bounds are included

In casual language, “between” can be ambiguous. State the inclusive range explicitly before drawing. A single-value range, such as 7 through 7, is valid and always returns 7. If you need decimals, custom exclusions, or nonconsecutive values, this range picker is not the correct input model.

Settings and limits to check

The picker returns integers, not decimals. Bounds must be whole numbers between −1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000, with the maximum at least the minimum. A batch can contain 1–100 values. Without repeats, the range must contain enough distinct values for the count. Separate batches can overlap because no history is kept.

Settings used in this example
Minimum: 20
Maximum: 40
How many: 1
Allow repeated numbers: Off

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the range, count, or other settings with the result when they are needed to interpret it. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Can the minimum and maximum be the same?

Yes. With a count of one, the only eligible integer will be returned.

Are both ends of the range eligible?

Yes. A range of 1 through 10 includes both 1 and 10, giving 10 eligible integers.

Can the same result appear in another batch?

Yes. Repeat prevention applies within the current batch, not across earlier generations.

What should I check in the worked example?

The result is one of 21 possible integers. It is not limited to the 19 integers strictly between the bounds.
