How to Generate Random Negative Numbers

Here’s how to generate random negative numbers: enter a negative lower bound and a maximum that is at least as large, then choose your count and repeat rule.

How to Generate Random Negative Numbers

Six distinct values are drawn from −20 through −1. Zero is deliberately excluded. The settings below match the worked example. Change them to match your activity. Nothing is generated until you select Pick numbers.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Set the inclusive range

Enter the lowest and highest eligible whole numbers. Both endpoints can be selected.

  2. Choose a count and repeat rule

Set How many?. Disable repeated numbers when every selected value should be unique within the batch.

  3. Generate and record the values

Select Pick numbers and save the displayed values before starting another generation. Keep the settings with the result if they matter.

Worked example

Six distinct values are drawn from −20 through −1. Zero is deliberately excluded.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example settings

Minimum: -20
Maximum: -1
How many: 6
Allow repeated numbers: Off

Example result

1. -10
2. -1
3. -20
4. -7
5. -13
6. -12

Every result is negative because the maximum is −1. Using a maximum of 0 would make zero eligible too.

Check the direction of negative bounds

Negative ordering can be easy to reverse: −20 is the minimum and −1 is the maximum. To include values on both sides of zero, choose a window such as −10 through 10. The count of eligible integers still includes both endpoints. The picker does not select decimals or values based on distance from zero.

Settings and limits to check

The picker returns integers, not decimals. Bounds must be whole numbers between −1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000, with the maximum at least the minimum. A batch can contain 1–100 values. Without repeats, the range must contain enough distinct values for the count. Separate batches can overlap because no history is kept.

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the range, count, or other settings with the result when they are needed to interpret it. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

How can I mix negative and positive integers?

Choose a negative minimum and a positive maximum; zero will also be eligible if it lies in that range.

Are both ends of the range eligible?

Yes. A range of 1 through 10 includes both 1 and 10, giving 10 eligible integers.

Can the same result appear in another batch?

Yes. Repeat prevention applies within the current batch, not across earlier generations.

What should I check in the worked example?

Every result is negative because the maximum is −1. Using a maximum of 0 would make zero eligible too.
