How-to guide Number sequence

How to Generate a Random Sequence of Numbers

Here’s how to generate a random sequence of numbers: choose the inclusive start and end, then shuffle the entire consecutive range. Every integer appears once.

How to Generate a Random Sequence of Numbers

The example creates a random order of the ten integers from 1 through 10. The settings below match the worked example. Change them to match your activity. Nothing is generated until you select Shuffle sequence.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Set the start and end

Enter inclusive integer bounds. The tool will include every number between them.

  2. Check the sequence length

The number of entries is end minus start plus one. Keep that count at or below 10,000.

  3. Shuffle the complete range

Select Shuffle sequence. Save the entire result and use its order rather than treating it as a smaller sample.

Worked example

The example creates a random order of the ten integers from 1 through 10.

One valid result is shown below. Your generated outcome will vary.

Example settings

Start: 1
End: 10

Example result

1. 10
2. 7
3. 6
4. 4
5. 5
6. 8
7. 9
8. 3
9. 2
10. 1

The output contains all ten values. It is a permutation of the range, not ten independent draws that might repeat or omit values.

Use the sequence when complete coverage matters

A station order, numbered checklist, or complete trial order often needs every value exactly once. The sequence tool states that requirement directly. For only five distinct values from a wider range, use Random Number Generator instead. For a range with missing or excluded IDs, paste the eligible values into Number Order Generator.

Settings and limits to check

Every integer in the inclusive range appears exactly once. Bounds can be negative but must lie between −1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000. The range cannot contain more than 10,000 integers. There is no step-size or missing-number setting. Use Number Order Generator when only a supplied subset should be included.

Start: 1
End: 10

Keep a usable copy of the result

Use Copy to place the current result in your own notes, or Download to keep a text file. Keep the range, count, or other settings with the result when they are needed to interpret it. A new generation replaces the displayed result rather than adding to a saved history.

The tool runs in your browser and does not upload your input. Save the result before refreshing or leaving the page. If other people need to use the same outcome, share your saved copy rather than asking them to generate another independent result.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sequence have to begin at 1?

No. Any supported integer start is allowed, including zero or a negative value, as long as the range is valid.

Can a number appear twice in the sequence?

No. Each integer in the selected range appears once. Separate generations can share positions by chance.

Can I shuffle only some numbers in a range?

Paste that subset into Number Order Generator instead. Sequence Generator includes the full consecutive range.

What should I check in the worked example?

The output contains all ten values. It is a permutation of the range, not ten independent draws that might repeat or omit values.
